First, What Are Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths in the muscular wall of the uterus. They are remarkably common — as many as 7 to 8 in 10 women will develop them by age 50. Fibroids can be as small as a pea or larger than a grapefruit, and while some cause no symptoms, others make life miserable.
The most common complaint is heavy menstrual bleeding: periods that last more than a week, soak through a pad or tampon in under two hours, or come with clots the size of a quarter or larger. Over time, that blood loss can cause iron-deficiency anemia — leaving you tired, pale, and short of breath. Fibroids can also cause pelvic pressure, frequent urination, back pain, and pain with intercourse.
Why Women Put Off Treatment
Surveys consistently show that women wait years before seeking help for fibroid symptoms. One of the biggest reasons? Fear that treatment means major surgery — or losing the uterus entirely.
That fear is outdated. Hysterectomy is one option for fibroids, but it is far from the only one. Today’s treatments range from medication to uterus-preserving procedures — and Sonata is among the least invasive of all.
What Is the Sonata Treatment?
Sonata (short for “sonography-guided transcervical ablation”) treats fibroids from inside the uterus, using the body’s natural openings. No cutting. No scarring. No stitches.
Here’s how it works: a slim handpiece is passed through the cervix into the uterus. A built-in ultrasound probe lets your physician see and map each fibroid in real time. Then, targeted radiofrequency energy heats the fibroid from within, causing it to shrink over the following weeks and months. As the fibroids shrink, symptoms fade.
The procedure typically takes less than an hour, is done on an outpatient basis, and doesn’t require general anesthesia for every patient — sedation options are tailored to you. Multiple fibroids can be treated in a single session, and your uterus stays exactly where it belongs.
What Results Can I Expect?
Sonata’s results come from a rigorous clinical trial program. Among women treated in the SONATA study:
- 95% reported reduced menstrual bleeding at 12 months
- 94% remained satisfied with their results three years after treatment
- More than half returned to normal activity by the next day
- Fewer than 1 in 10 needed surgical re-treatment for heavy bleeding within three years
Some women notice lighter periods within their very first cycle after treatment; for most, full results arrive within two to three cycles.
Is Sonata Right for Me?
Sonata is designed for women whose fibroids cause heavy bleeding and who want relief without traditional surgery. It can treat many fibroid types and sizes, including fibroids that other incisionless methods can’t reach.
It isn’t for everyone. Sonata is not used during pregnancy, with an active pelvic infection, or when gynecologic cancer is suspected. And because its effect on future fertility hasn’t been formally established, women planning a pregnancy should discuss all their options first.
