Urge Incontinence Treatment in Ocala, FL

There are several different types of urinary incontinence. Urge incontinence is a sudden and intense need to urinate that is soon followed by an unwanted contraction of the bladder, which causes an involuntary loss of urine before a patient makes it to the bathroom.

Some patients may experience the urgency and frequency of urination without having leakage of urine, or what is known as overactive bladder. Often patients with urinary urge incontinence or overactive bladder will describe having to always be running to the bathroom. The occasional, minor leaks of urine caused by urge incontinence are more likely to occur in women and older adults.

Struggling with a sudden, strong urge to urinate? Urge urinary incontinence is a common yet treatable condition. At Florida Women’s Health, Dr. Kelsey Lipking, MD, a fellowship-trained urogynecologist, offers personalized, compassionate care to help you regain control and confidence.

Causes of Urge Incontinence

Most often urinary urge incontinence does not have a clear cause. However, there are a few different types of medical conditions that may be causing urge incontinence to occur. Workup of urge urinary incontinence may also involve evaluation of:

  • A bladder infection
  • Painful bladder syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis
  • Pregnancy or childbirth
  • Menopause and Vaginal Atrophy
  • Bladder cancer
  • Neurological disorders
  • Bladder or kidney stones
  • An obstruction near the opening of the bladder

Treatment for Urge Incontinence

Treatment of urinary urgency incontinence is tailored to the patient’s needs and is driven by the amount of bother of patient symptoms. This can range from lifestyle and behavioral changes to interventions such as medications or procedures. However, if you are finding it difficult to perform everyday activities due to your urge incontinence, then it may be time to consult with a urogynecology specialist. Common medical treatments for urge incontinence include:

  • Pelvic floor muscle exercises
  • Medications
  • Bladder Botox injections
  • Sacral Neuromodulation

It is important to carefully weigh the risks and benefits associated with these various forms of treatment, and to discuss them all thoroughly with your healthcare provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Urge urinary incontinence is a sudden, intense need to urinate that's difficult to suppress, often resulting in leakage before you can reach the bathroom. It is the hallmark symptom of overactive bladder (OAB). It can occur multiple times a day and at night.

Urge incontinence is often caused by involuntary bladder muscle contractions (overactive bladder). Contributing factors include nerve changes, bladder irritants (caffeine, alcohol, artificial sweeteners), urinary tract infections, menopause, and neurological conditions.

Most people urinate 6 to 8 times per day. Urinating more than 8 times per day, or waking up more than once at night to urinate, may indicate overactive bladder or another condition worth evaluating.

Options include bladder training and timed voiding, dietary modifications (reducing caffeine, alcohol, and bladder irritants), prescription medications, bladder Botox injections, and nerve stimulation therapy. Dr. Lipking will guide you to the most effective approach for your situation.

Yes. Bladder Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is FDA-approved for overactive bladder. The injection is performed under local anesthesia and takes about 15 minutes. Improvement typically lasts 6 months. Clinical studies show up to a 50% reduction in daily leakage episodes, with 1 in 4 patients achieving complete dryness.
